Wow, Alice Elliott's talent has really been used to make her successful. She's put her talent for detail and her love of design in a package that works. She's made use of her talent by learning skills that she is naturally gifted towards – the perfect way of blending the two.
People often wonder what comes first, the skill or the talent, to my mind, it's the talent within you that you're born with and then when that talent in recognised, it can be developed, grown and honed when we adapt our work skills towards that natural talent. Skills can be learned but we will only truly be fabulous at using that skill, if our natural talents lend themselves to it, otherwise, it simply feels like we're fighting to learn something or 'not getting' what we're being taught. In Alice's world there's none of that, here's what she says;
1. What talent do you naturally have that makes you successful?
I have an eye for detail and an understanding of space within design. This is a particular area that can be badly managed by inexperienced designers. The importance of space is emphasised by the need to navigate the eye towards the focal point of a piece of design, especially for marketing reasons. It aids recognition, understanding and ultimately action.
2. When did you first realise that talent was going to help you and how do you use it?
My mother keeps a file of ‘design atrocities’ which we have a little giggle over occasionally. I decided to analyse why they were so bad, and this research, which resulted in realisation, led me to develop my design business to include a marketing twist; take advantage of the elements that create good design and combine them with good marketing practice and the result are leaflets, postcards, brochures, etc that actually start to work to gain business. It’s all about simplicity merged with customer-led concepts, of which the same principles can be applied to websites too.
