For most people, it's getting in a rut that leads them to seek the professional services of coaches such as myself and Anita Houghton and it's getting 'out' of a rut that coaches like us find particularly interesting and exciting!
Having the ability to get someone else out of a rut may seem like you're just going to tell them what to do but nothing could be further away from the reality. Getting others out of a rut in the way that coaches like Anita work, means that Anita has taken her natural talent for making sense of situations, and then learned the skills of everything from goal setting to building communication, then practised the twinning of her talent and her skills many hundreds of times to hone them, which made her an expert in her field. To top it all off, she then took her expertise and put it all in a book!
Being able to work out the intricacies of a rut, the paths that led a client there and how a client can build the paths out of the rut is all in a days work for Anita! Here's what she says;
1. What talent do you naturally have that makes you successful?
That’s such a good question because I’m not sure that many of us think about our talents very often. For me I think it’s an ability to help people get out of ruts and make the most of their lives. People tell me where they are in their careers, all the ups and downs, how they got where they are and why, and somehow I’m able to make sense of it in a way that helps them. Part of that is a natural optimism about people and their gifts – I find it easy to see how great someone is, and how they could do anything they wanted, and no sooner do I start to communicate that confidence than they start to feel more confident too.
2. When did you first realise that talent was going to help you and how do you use it?
It’s hard to give a specific time as the realisation came to me gradually. It started with my own worries about my career (I had trained and specialised as a doctor), when I sought the kind of help that I now give. I learned so much during that period that I felt driven to pass it on. I trained as a coach and started to write articles, and got great feedback, and little by little people started to seek out my help. It was when clients would arrive looking glum and feeling hopeless about their careers, and leave with big smiles on their faces that I realised that I did have that ability to help people. In time I was able to put all that into a book, and so reach many more people.
