You see! You knew being nosy would end up being a good thing at some point didn't you! Haha, being nosy is my number one tip for when I'm training new up and coming coaches – during a coaching session, it's the one time you can legitimately ask the questions that no-one else feels they can, in order to help move your client forward – it's nosiness 'with respect' I hastened to add, but nosiness nevertheless!
It appears that coaching isn't the only field this talent makes you excel in either. Diane Shipley knows only too well that without her 'pure unabashed nosiness' talent, she wouldn't be as good at her job as she is – she can tell you the rest...
1. What talent do you naturally have that makes you successful?
I was going to say "being a good writer" but then I thought about what you really need in journalism and I realised the one talent or virtue I've never had to work for is... pure unabashed nosiness. Or a more tactful way of putting it would be: I'm observant. I'm always eavesdropping, people-watching, and wanting to know more about people - and I have a knack of remembering the minutiae of other people's lives (SO much more interesting than my own!)
2. When did you first realise that talent was going to help you and how do you use it?
I didn't have an Oprah-style "aha moment" but I've realised just from talking to friends and family members that not everyone pays as much attention to the people around them as I do. I still remember verbatim a hilarious conversation I overheard three months ago and anecdotes like that inform my writing. Also not everyone has my ability to observe and take notes without being spotted (I'd make a fantastic spy). It's great in interviews when I can bond with my case study over some unusual fact that I remember reading about ten years ago, too. Nosiness is very underrated.
