That's the key you know! Taking hold of one of your existing personality traits and steering it in a direction that will bring you positive action, a clear path forward if you like and you'll have a talent that comes to you easily. That's exactly what Kelly Stevens did. Being tenacious is, as she admits, a double edged sword. That's true for many traits we all possess though, the trick is to used them ethically and learn how to harness them to reach your potential – that's exactly what Kelly does and boy has she done well!
1. What talent do you naturally have that makes you successful?
The first word that springs to mind is that I’m tenacious, but although that has been a useful talent I think it can be a bit of a double edge sword! On the positive side it means that I’ve approached my career with a positive and driven attitude, and I don’t give up until I have things going in the direction that I want. On the negative side it has meant in the past that I have sometimes worked on something that was never going to go anywhere, but nowadays I’ve learned to direct my tenaciousness to the right projects.
2. When did you first realise that talent was going to help you and how do you use it?
I recognised that tenacity (or you could call it stubbornness!) was a useful tool with the first business I ran, when I was building my client base through cold calling. Yes I got disheartened when people said ‘No’, but I just wouldn’t give up and just rang the next one on the list. I sold that business ten years ago, but was recently speaking to the new owner, and had a sneaky look at the database. It reminded me of how I had pursued some clients for over eight years before they finally came on board. Now that’s tenacious!
