Let's be honest, keeping quiet isn't generally what we girls are known for but it just goes to show - when we do, we get more than we think! Keeping quiet is something I encourage all my student coaches to do and its something I've had to practice too! Our next pink expert Mary Wright, attributes her ability to keep quiet as her key to success so read on!
1: What talent do you have that makes you naturally successful?
I'd say my most useful talent is the ability to keep quiet, listen very carefully and let the client talk. Working as a graphic designer, there's obviously a stage in the conversation when I need to ask a lot of precise questions to get a feel for how the client views their own business but it's surprising how often I can pick up on valuable information when the client is just chatting about their life outside work, hobbies, likes and dislikes etc.
2: When did you first realise that talent was going to help you and how do you use it?
About fifteen years ago a former BBC producer commissioned me to design a logo for her new business, a communications training and video production company. Once we'd established what Boxclever was all about, the conversation carried on and the client happened to mention her admiration of the work of MC Escher, famous for his illustrations of optical illusions. I like them myself so when I began brainstorming ideas, the use of an optical illusion was high on the list and included in one of the options I finally presented. The client was delighted and the repetitive pattern was used throughout the Boxclever marketing material and even etched into a glass wall in the office.
Ever since then, I've made a point of concentrating on the small details and find that if I can design a logo which reflects a little of the clients' own personality, as well as encapsulating the nature of the business, that's the one they will choose.
