What talent do you naturally have that makes you successful?
Creativity, determination, drive, common sense/ business sense and a thick skin.
When did you first realise that talent was going to help you and how do you use it?
I was always really good at art in School and I wanted a way I could still be creative in my work but in a viable business. So Graphic Design and Web Design was the perfect choice. I still get to be creative but in a modern day application / need.
What emotional attachment do you have to your work?
I sometimes feel very attached to my work. With the type of work we do it is hard to not take any offence if someone is not as excited about your designs as you are. Over the years I have learnt to think that everyone sees things differently and has a different opinion on design. Whist some people may see things and say they don't like it another person will say they love it. It is our job to explain why one design solution is better or more saleable than another and not take things too personally. Emotionally I feel I have to have half of me being creative the other half being business minded and somehow find a balance in between. Personally I have always wanted to make my Dad and family proud. My mum, who passed away when I was young, was very creative and I feel maybe this job and these skills I have been given have been inherited on from her.
What tips do you have for other women who'd like to do your job?
Stick at it and get lots of experience in different businesses as it all helps build not only your portfolio but helps you learn how different companies, client, agencies and suppliers work and understand people's needs better. A degree or technical knowledge alone will not make you a great Senior Designer or Creative Director.
