What talent do you naturally have that makes you successful?
Empathy and a good set of ears to start! I listen to my clients needs and offer well considered advice based on a situation by situation basis. I am also very understanding, which is hugely important in my work. Women are too often critical of themselves (unlike men!) so putting people at ease and reassuring them on the process and the decisions we make together is crucial. I would say I am also somewhat of a perfectionist - I think you have to be in this industry and I strive to ensure my clients are 100% happy with their garment before they leave me.
When did you first realise that talent?
When I first started my tailoring career, I felt there was the opportunity to offer so much more than just ‘selling a product’. I wanted to become a resource, someone whom my clients would call upon if they needed something extra special or even just a ‘what to wear with this dress’ type of question! After spending time working for two top London tailors, I decided to launch my own collection based upon all the different body types I’d worked with. On a daily basis I consult ladies in either their home, office or from my Savile Row base, creating and designing for day and evening wear.
What emotional attachment do you have to your work?
I love my work. I love seeing a client’s face when they put on an outfit we have created together. I can sometimes literally see their face transform to a ‘Wow, is that really me?!’. One lady told me she had been stopped in the street recently and complimented on her outfit...that's a good day for me.
What tips do you have for other women who'd like to do your job?
Gain experience working for a tailoring company. Pay attention to every process from the cutting of the fabric to the invoices that come in. Gaining an all round insight into the business will act as an excellent springboard for your tailoring career. Get designing, show your designs to family and friends and gage peoples responses, perhaps even have a few samples made and see how you get along. It’s a slow process, you are dealing with investment garments so allowing time and the capacity to allow your business to grow is crucial. Lastly ENJOY!
