What talent do you naturally have that makes you successful?
I recognize trends and create businesses around them. I've noticed customization of clothing has been increasing in popularity over the years. I love fashion, especially casual-wear like t-shirts, so starting Design Like Whoa!, a custom t-shirt printing service, was a perfect fit for me. Along with Design Like Whoa!, I also run a t-shirt line called Startup Apparel. Entrepreneurship has become such a huge trend, especially in the Silicon Valley where I am based, so it was another natural fit.
When did you first realise that talent was going to help you and how do you use it?
I never had a sudden realization this talent would help me succeed. I am naturally interested in fashion and trends, so it's what I pursued. Before I started my own business, I used to design t-shirt graphics and submit them to sites like Design By Humans to see what feedback I would get. Back then, I had no idea I would eventually turn my hobby into a business.
What emotional attachment do you have to your work?
I often create designs for customers, so I get really excited when I see people wearing them around. I always feel a little attached to the t-shirts I print.
What tips do you have for other women who'd like to do your job?
I encourage other women interested in starting a business to put themselves out there and start creating. I have no formal training in fashion or graphic design, but I taught myself everything I know today, and I'm still learning. These days are so many resources to help you succeed. There are millions of how-to's online and lots of useful events where you can meet people with similar interests or experience in the industry you want get into.
One great resource I use is Meetup. They allow you to create interest groups or attend existing ones in your area.
